He was a great fan of our hobby, and played not only to win, but to have the best time he could; from this we spawned the MMMT, to provide a fun weekend of gaming, and raise money for a charity chosen by Mike's parents (The OSPCA this year.)

Overall we managed to raise just over $1,200, through entry fees, a raffle (which we had running for, among other things, a full 2,300 pt Khorne Chaos army), and 20% of the profits from the bring-and-buy table.

The tournament ran to 1850 pts, and lasted 4 rounds; scoring was 56% in favour of Generalship, 35% Sportsmanship, and 9% Painting.

I took the following list (After staying up super late wildly painting, trying to get it all done:

Marneus Calgar - Wearing the Armor of Antilochus
Librarian - Null Zone, The Avenger
Tactical Squad 1 - (Combi-Melta, Melta Bombs, Meltagun, Missile Launcher)
Tactical Squad 2 - (Combi-Flamer, Power Fist, Flamer, Heavy Bolter)
Tactical Squad 3 - (Combi-Plasma, Plasma Gun, Heavy Bolter)
Tactical Squad 4 - (Combi-Melta, Power Fist, Meltagun, Multi-Melta)
Dreadnought - Heavy Flamer/Multimelta
- All in Drop Pods
Assault Terminators (9X Thunderhammer Stormshield, 1 Lightning Claw)

This was a compact list that, in my few test games, was fun as anything to use. I'm used to running an armored spearhead with a pair of Land Raiders, so it was fun to change over to an army that drops my marines in my opponent's cornflakes on turn 1.

So, in brief, we won't be getting pictures this time, seeing as it was a tourney, and I ran out of time on nearly every game. It's a shame though, I should have gotten pictures of my opponent's armies, at least.

Game 1: Dragon Knights VS. Space Wolves

Mission 1 was a primary of Kill points, Standard Deployment, with a secondary called "Blood Bowl". The basic concept was that in the center of the board was a 'ball', and any of your units could grab it and go for a touchdown on the opponent's board edge. If the model carrying the ball was killed, it would scatter 1d6 inches in the direction indicated on a scatter die.

My first opponent of the day (Mike Brennan of the SGU) ran one of the armies I was dreading; a Wolfwing, drop pod force. He had 4 pods loaded with Wolf Guard in Terminator armor, all armed individually, a Dreadnought with assault cannon in a pod, and Logan Grimnar with his Long Fang Retinue, in a pod, with Multimeltas.

So looking at the lists we have here, you can see the problem... Mike Thornhill, another player and member of the Stratford Gaming Union, said it best. With 11 pods on the table, it really was going to come down to who won the roll-off for choice of first turn!

I won that roll-off, however, and allowed my opponent the pleasure of first turn. Deployment was pretty simple; since everything was arriving via pods, he kept everything off the table; My only real choice was whether or not my Terminators would be on the table, or not. I chose to bring them in via Deep Strike, and they remained in reserve all game.

That being said, however, I didn't really need them, as 1450pts of my army practically wiped out his with extreme prejudice; if we hadn't run out of time on turn 4, I would have had the massacre, as my Terminators (Who landed turn 4 and did absolutely nothing), were in perfect charge range to eat Logan and the Dreadnought (his only remaining models) on turn 5. Ah well... Solid Victory for me!

Highlights: This game had people coming over after their games were done to see what was known as the 'Pod Forest'; at one point we had 9 drop pods on the table, and hadn't bothered to attack any of them!

Game 2: Dragon Knights Vs. Orks

Game two was against Bill Murray (Also of the SGU), playing a massive Kan List; He had 3 Squads of roughly 30 boyz (1 of which was 'Ard Boyz), a Deff Dread, Ghazkhull, a Big Mek (With Kustom Forcefield), and 12 Kans!!

Once again, I won the roll-off for deployment, and gave him 1st turn; the mission was Capture and Control, where we placed out objectives nicely in the EXACT opposite corners from each other. The secondary was, to keep it short, to control 2 cannons that were firing random pie plates across the table, and could hit either side's forces.

Once again, I left the Terminators in reserve, and they didn't even see the board this game; it only made it to turn 3, but we decided they wouldn't make a difference then either (Though they could have, in retrospect; had I deepstruck PERFECTLY, combat squadding them out, I could have contested both of the cannons and pulled a draw, but oh well.)

I dropped behind his army, right on top of his objective, but while in my last game my firepower wiped the board with my opponent, this game they killed a dismal 9 orks in their first turn of shooting (Bad podding on my part; I went after the 'ard boyz with my flamers). It ended with Bill contesting his own objective with a 2 Kan squad, and Ghazzy and his troop Nobz about 5 inches away from his objective; he had the minor, unless I could miraculously destroy the Kan on his objective!

Highlights: My favourite part was the mad scramble at the end; we had 4 minutes to rattle through my turn, so we skipped a lot of movement and assaults to deal with what really mattered; could I kill that kan squad? A missile launcher shot (Fired hail-mary style through 3 pods, past another kan squad, and over the heads of a few raging combats managed to still destroy a kan, despite the cover save. This, however, took my nearby melta-gun squad out of range of that last, forward kan! It then came down to my squads that combo-charged it, whipping 9 krak grenades at the kan, praying at least 1 hit... and all of which missed. That last turn was a nail biter though! Minor Win to my opponent! (Putting me about 2nd to last on the leaderboard for game 3.)

Game 3: Dragon Knights VS. Ultramarines

I wasn't really looking forward to this game, as I'd played this guy before and had a bad time, but I was determined to make the best of it. The scenario was multiple objectives, with the secondary being Moral Victory (Killing units in H2H, or with shooting). I chose H2H, and this time decided to deploy my terminators on the board; a good choice since (But for a little underhanded playing on my opponent's part) they might have gained me the game!

In addition, (Though it had no effect on our game, as we forgot to use it), there was a fluctuating gravity field on the board, which would either allow us to move much faster, or much slower.

Once again, I scored the roll-off, and went 2nd; my pods must have been reeling a little from my defeat at the hands of the orks, however, given how poorly they performed, but I still managed, on turn 4, to be sitting on an objective with two scoring units after having slaughtered an entire tactical squad with Calgar, alone.

Highlights: None. The game was ok up until the last 15 minutes; I found him argumentative, but I put up with it. However, in the last 15 minutes, he became 'that guy' that we all want to avoid. The situation was simple; we were running out of time (I'd have loved another 15 minutes, believe me.), on turn 4. Marneus had charged his last full unit of tactical marines, pulling them forward and off their objective. On the other hand, 5 terminators had just moved to within 3 inches of the one objective I controlled, contesting it.

So this meant I was looking at another minor loss, unless I could do the same to those terminators that Calgar had done to the tactical squad. So I charged them, and this is where the hammer dropped (About 10 minutes left at this point). First, my opponent claims my Terminators are outside of charge range, so I'm forced to move them back into coherency and re-measure (They were EASILY in, by about 3/4ths of an inch).

Then, seeing that didn't work, he claims that I have to roll for difficult terrain. These Terminators were partially in terrain, but the models I was set up to charge had their bases outside of it; I didn't have to cross or enter difficult terrain to reach them. Now note, I had moved my Termi's fairly; I had even charged his 2 man tactical squad with the back few guys, rather than trying to cheat them around to the main target. So he wastes another 5 minutes, even calling over a judge (Who ALSO sided with me).

Then, just as I'm preparing to roll my attacks, the TO comes in and calls dice down, rounds over. After speaking with them later, I should have insisted on finishing the combat, as the outcome required my 6 terminators to only kill 1 of my enemy's, thereby claiming my objective with a Major Victory for me. Ah well; I suppose I should thank him; his underhandedness DID lead to my 4th game, which was the best I had that day.

Game 4: Dragon Knights VS. Orks - Redux!

So, for my final game, I played another ork player, and I'd just like to state for the record that I was fuming from my past game when I started. That changed radically once this game began, however, as my opponent was an absolute blast to play against. In addition, this was the only game that made it to the 5th turn.

He'd brought 2X units of boyz, 1 shoota 1 choppa, 30 Lootaz in 2 units, Ghazzy and nobz with painboy, and mega-armored nobz with painboy. The mission was Dawn of War, multiple objectives again, but this time the secondary was victory points, scored as usual. However, the scoring units were modified, with Troops counting as 3 units controlling an objective, Elites were two, etc...

In reality though, the mission mattered little in this powerful slugga fest! As usual, turn 1 my opponent ran around, taking objectives, and then my pods rained down on him, slaughtering one unit of lootaz, and putting a giant dent in his boyz. Turn battle raged back and forth like mad, however; My dreadnought blew up a battlewagon, and Ghazzy tore it apart. 1 unit of tac marines slaughtered those lootaz, and were in turn spanked by the meganobz. Once again, My Terminators walked on the board 1st turn, to avoid the curse of the 1st two games, and saved Calgar from his desperate gambit against a full 30 boy mob (Alone!)

Highlights: While game three was a pain to play, and I didn't enjoy my opponent's attitude, Game 4 was a blast from start to finish. My opponent was loud and boisterous, enjoying the sight of orks flying everywhere just as much as marines. We had a few great points, however, such as Calgar calling down the thunder in the form of an Orbital Bombardment on Ghazzy and his nobs, wounding all but one and slaying all but the warboss and his nob.

Another point of interest was the running battle of attrition between the choppa boyz and my poor combat squadded tactical squad. They were charged, and should have vanished under a sea of greenskin bodies, however they only lost a single marine. They killed 6 orks back, but the TRUE highlight was when the nob attacked their pod, plowing it up in a 6 inch template, and wounding 19 orks, which caused 13 bodies to hit the floor.

Calgar and his Terminators lashed out at Ghazzy and the meganobz, slaying the nobz to a man, and laying the warboss low after he reaped an impressive toll himself, and then they slammed into that wild combat, which had lasted 3 turns! This turned out to end the game, in a massacre result for me, given all that was left was a Big mek, and a Loota squad on his side, both out of position to score on those objectives.

Final Thoughts:

The 2nd annual MMMT was a fun time, barring the 1 sour note, and I will be attending again next year. My only suggestion, despite it being 4 rounds, would be to extend round times to 2.5 hours, with early start-times if everyone finishes ahead of time; I found it very hard to get 5 turns in over the course of two hours, especially given that we only had 10 minutes per player to resolve a turn.

Until next time, I'm out!Dragon Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11923697878871992308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7168899359935764323.post-22449340891553808882010-09-29T11:20:00.000-07:002010-10-04T17:17:51.948-07:00Step-by-Step Painting: Captain Tycho!

Hey there everyone,

This time around we're hitting another step by step painting tutorial following my latest attempt to increase my abilities. I painted Captain Tycho for a friend of mine, as a way of trying my hand at Non Metallic Metals for the first time. I used Games Workshop's article on painting the Sanguinor, and modified it for my purposes.

While the crazed Captain didn't turn out as well as the amazing Eavy Metal effort, I'm very pleased with how he turned out for my first shot at NMM. For those that have never tried it before, Non-Metallic Metals is a painting technique that uses multiple blends of flat based colours to give the false impression of a metallic sheen. It's a VERY difficult technique (As evidenced by the fact that I had to restart 3x while painting Tycho), and is practically a Golden Demon requirement.

So let's get started! I'll be detailing with pictures the work to get him done in NMM, with tips for if you choose not to follow that technique and use metallic paints instead. Obviously we start with a primed mini, and then we launch straight into the job! Note, I've kept the backpack separate from the main mini, to help with getting to the rest of the model; don't forget to paint the backpack gold as well!

Step 1: Basecoat the model with Dark Flesh on any section that you want to come out gold. (In my case, the backpack, armour, and face mask). Through this tutorial you might see Tycho's Right shoulder pad slowly painted gold; don't do this. I kicked myself after getting a great look on it and it turned out I had to paint it red.

Step 2: Next, you want to apply a 1:1 mix of Calthan Brown and Snakebite Leather to the armor, ensuring that you allow the Dark Flesh to show through in the cracks; wherever there is a raised area, on the lowered section immediately next to it, you want to leave the flesh tone.

Step 3: Next you want to take pure Snakebite Leather and add a drop of bleached bone to it. You want to apply it wherever the light would be brightest on the model, depending on the location of the light source. For my first try, I set a lamp directly over Tycho's head, and wherever it looked brightest, applied a thin coat.

Step 4: This is simply a repeat of the last step, multiple times. Add a drop, mix it, and then re-apply towards the brightest light source. Depending on how smooth a transition you want to get, you will re-do this several times until it's nearly a 1:1 mix. Every time you add that drop of paint, too, make sure you highlight with thinner lines, allowing your previous efforts to show through. My example here is after roughly 4 more coats.

Step 5: (Well not really 5, but for sake of argument)Next you want to water down some Dark Flesh and wash the entire model. No, what are you saying Dragon Knight?! It looks terrible! That's fine, it's to draw back on those highlights a bit and blend it together more.

Step 6: Now we want to mix a 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Dark Flesh... and wash it again! Now the model looks even worse, but if it was a light enough wash, it'll do what we need it to.

Step 7: Okay, okay, back to making this look good. Remember where you were applying those Snakebite/Bone highlights? Take some thinned down bleached bone and apply a THIN line of it wherever those highlights were made. I overdid it a little and had to go back, but you get the idea.

Step 8: Now take some Skull White, and apply a dot of it to the highest, brightest points on the model. In addition, you want to apply some thinned down white in a reflection line to the plates on his upper chest, to give the illusion of reflection.

Step 9: Our next step is to make this actually look like gold, instead of well highlighted brown. Take heavily watered down Sunburst Yellow, and apply it on the entire model; there's not much point in it hitting the darker sections, but when it hits the whiter areas, you can see how it's starting to work for us.

Step 10: Repeat Step 8, only even more sparingly with the skull white. If you've got source pictures of NMM, they can help you with this step. ALTERNATIVE: If you're skipping here from step 1, just apply Shining Gold Paint wherever there's Armor, wash it with Brown Ink, and mix a 1:1 Shining Gold/Mithril Silver highlight that you can apply to the upper edges of the armor. It takes a fraction of the time!

Step 11: Okay! All that to get the armor! As a break, we'll do some easier stuff to get all that detail out of your mind. Take some Deneb Stone and apply a thin coat to his tabard and the parchment of the purity seals.

Step 12: Next you want to wash each of those sections that you just painted with Griphonne Sepia. Watch that you don't get it on the armor in a light section; in the dark ones you'll be ok.

Step 13: Next take Astronomicon Grey and apply it to the metal wings on the belt and shoulder. The hair is optional; some people choose to make it blonde, but I decided I wanted to go for the look of a grizzled veteran.

Step 14: A quick splash of Tallarn Flesh to the face for a quick basecoat comes next.

Step 15: Wash that Astronomicon Grey with Badab Black! Regular readers will recognize what we're doing from my Dragon Knight Terminator tutorial.

Step 16: Next, we want to bring some definition to the tabard; Kommando Khaki will set it apart from the parchment on those scrolls, making sure that the Sepia wash still shows through in the recesses.

Step 17: Wash his face with Ogryn Flesh, being careful not to get it in his hair (too much!)

Step 18: There are a few Leather items, pouches and the holster; basecoat them straight Calthan Brown.

Step 19: Wash those leather sections with Devlan Mud, again careful to not get it on the armor.

Step 20: Jumping back up to the face, we're going to put another coat of Tallarn Flesh in place, letting the wash in the recesses show through some more; Tycho has a heavily lined face, so we're going to get a great look when done.

Step 21: Bam! We just jumped about another 5 steps, but that's because we're going to finish Tycho's face completely and I'll be doing a face tutorial later. So, in short, you want to add some skull white and apply it to the portions of his face that would show the light the best, just like the armor. The difference here is that you're going to mix a LITTLE chaos black into it each time, to give his face a slightly haggard look. Mine took another 4 coats. From there, direct Skull White on the eye and a black dot for the pupil, and it's done!

Step 22: Next you're going to mix a 1:1 Fortress Grey / Skull White mix and finish off his hair, making sure to allow the darker grey from underneath shows through on some strands. This is a chance to clean up any oops' that occured when finishing his chiseled mug.

Step 23: Now with some pure Skull White, you want to hit just the tips of Tycho's hair, highlight the edges of the purity seals, and put a coat of white on the wings on the armor (May take two depending on coverage). Again, as always, make sure the dark grey in the recesses still shows through.

Step 24: Ok folks, unfortunately the wait is over; after knocking your brains out over the gold armor, I've given you as much of a break as I can. Now it's time to start the Non Metallic Metal on the gun. Hit it with Codex Grey wherever you want it to be metal. (Alternately, skim the next few steps, but apply Boltgun Metal to the same locations, wash with black, and highlight with Chainmail.)

Step 25: Next, you want to start applying Skull White to the Codex Grey; draw an invisible line where that lightsource is coming from, and start lightening it towards the top of the metal surfaces until you're nearly to pure white. I did it in 5 steps; this is slightly different from the armor, since we were going for an actually shiny look there; here we want more a dull colour.

Step 26: Now from that invisible line, you want to go down, applying Chaos Black to the grey until it's nearly the colour of Adeptus Battlegrey. This marks the end of the NMM that you have to do on Tycho; we'll cheat a little when it comes time to do the studs ;)

Step 27: Now from here we do the rear shoulder pad, blood drops and the gun; Mix a 1:1 of Mechrite Red and Scab Red, and apply it straight onto the surfaces. Right about now you can feel my pain at having to paint that shoulder pad!

Step 28: Next mix 1:1 Scab Red and Chaos Black, water it down a bit and apply it sparingly to the outer edges of the shoulder pad, and the recesses on the Combi Bolter.

Step 29: Mix a 1:1 of Mechrite Red and Blood Red, and now you want to lightly apply it to those upper areas on the gun casing, and the central section of the shoulder pad, as well as all over the blood drops. You can drybrush the shoulderpad here, but don't do it for the gun.

Step 30: Now mix 1:1 Blood Red and Fiery Orange, and highlight the upper edges of the gun and drops. Also, you can apply a VERY light drybrush to the top of the shoulder pad here.

Step 31: Take Skull White again and apply a couple dots to the uppermost portion of the shoulderpad, and the TOP edges of that combi bolter and blood drops. Be very sparing here; this is to just give a slightly sparkling effect.

Step 32: Ok, enough highlighting and shading for a moment; take Chaos Black straight out of the pot, and paint the trim on the Shoulder pads. I've also taken the opportunity to do my detailing on the tabard and add black scrawling script on his purity seals.

Step 33: Next we're going to quickly paint the wax on those purity seals. Base them with Scab Red, and then hit the raised edges of them with Blood Red. There are dozens of colours you could put on them; some people even paint them purple, so do what seems most comfortable to you. If you're doing the red though, this is also the perfect time to paint the eye inside the halfmask on Tycho's face.

Step 34: Apologies for the blurry picture, my camera acts up from time to time. However, you can see that you need to apply some Graveyard Earth to the edges of all the leather pouches on the model.

Step 35: Next, you want to use hard edging to highlight the extreme edges of the shoulder pad trim with Adeptus Battlegrey...

Step 36: ... and follow up on the corners where the light would be brightest with codex grey!

Step 37: And now we cheat! See all those studs and screws? Rather than paint each one painstakingly with NMM and get very little results, just take some Mithrill Silver straight out of the pot and presto!

Step 38: Now we're on a cleanup stage; any little details you've missed should be painted now. I used the previous techniques on the winged skull on that combi bolter to get it done, and picked out a few wires with straight blood red.

Step 39: Next we want to take some Tin Bitz and drybrush it liberally all over the end of that combi melta (Covering some of that beautiful NMM, oh no!). If you want a Combi-Melta that's never been fired, you can skip this step. Next put some chaos black down the barrel (drybrushing again),

Step 40: Now we come to the gems; I chose to go the same colour as the ones in that white dwarf, but you could paint them whatever colours you choose... the principles stay the same. First, basecoat the gems in your darkest colour (Regal Blue for me).

Step 41: Next add intermediate colours on the side facing away from the light; I used Hawk Turquoise and an even smaller sliver of Ice Blue. Then take some skull white and put a dot of it on the side closest to the light. And Tycho himself is done!

Step 42: Now if you've followed my tutorial through to the letter, you have a great looking Tycho, minus a backpack; it's up to you how you want to handle this. There're the old 3rd edition backpacks that are meant for regular hugger marines from that era, the Sergeant backapacks with banner poles for those who want to do some freehand, or the metal Captain pack with the cape that I chose to use.

Some advice, however; if you use the metal pack, you want to cut the nub off Tycho's back before painting with some clippers. The metal pack won't fit right if you don't, and will look strange when you glue it in place. The principles for painting the pack are the same; gold like the armor (Which I think turned out better than the armor itself), steel for the vent sections, and I used the same technique for the cape that we used on the combi bolter and shoulderpad. I also suggest hand-painting the Blood Angels symbol, if you can, to avoid having to muck around putting a decal where on when that script is on that pad.

Once the backpack is done, all that remains is to base him! I chose a desert scheme, with the severed ork head to represent his hatred of Orks, and the Weirdboy that caused his hideous rictus that made him require that face mask.

Total time to paint was about 30 hours, but I'm really pleased with the result.

I hope everyone found this informative, and if you have thoughts on Non Metallic Metals, or any of the techniques I used, please feel free to share!Dragon Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11923697878871992308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7168899359935764323.post-35596799425106960212010-09-22T11:09:00.000-07:002010-09-22T12:04:45.585-07:00Product Review - Malifaux Death Marshals!

Hello again!

So this week we're going to be diving into a brand new product I picked up about a month ago and built nearly on the spot; the Malifaux starter set for the Guild, known as the "Death Marshals". Now, this isn't going to be a formal review like those that I post for tutorials, but more a journey through my experience building the set, and my first impressions of the models themselves. I'll be painting them at a later date, so I'll write a separate article for that.

So lets take a look at what we get inside:

The set comes with 5 models; Lady Justice, the official head of the Death Marshals (And a behemoth in game, with 12 wounds!), a nameless "Judge", who is a great second unit to the set, nearly as tough as his mistress, and 3 unique "Death Marshals". So on first impressions, I rate this as a very "Hero-centric" set, playing up how amazing Lady Justice (Here-on Lady J.) is, since you get three nameless characters. This contrasts very differently from the Ortega band that my friend Mike bought, where each character is a unique and strong personality in his own right.

So inside the box, I was impressed that everything came in its own little bag, and the economy of packing was impressive compared to some of Games Workshop's 5 model sets that take up a box 3X its size. Each model had a fair bit of release agent on it, however, so I had to give them each a quick rinse before I dove in.

So, instead of starting with the grunts and working my way up to the hero (Like usual for me), I decided I wanted to build Lady J first.

*Stick*

Well there you have it; she's a beautiful model, and all one piece. All it took was some glue on the base, and she was done.

Next up came the Judge, a grand total of two pieces, but that chain on the improvised 'gunblade' was a pain in the butt to deal with. It was right about now that I started to realize just how pliable the metal used in Malifaux Miniatures really is. His blade was completely bent over to touch the hilt, fresh out of the package, but since it was so pliable I was able to bend it back easily.

Of all the Death Marshals, this guy is my favourite, visually; as you can see on the picture, those wisps of ethereal... whatever... will look amazing once painted. He's two pieces, but that arm didn't want to go on for love, nor money. Ergo, I had to grab some Green Stuff (Which my friend Pete declared 'cheating!' when he saw it), to cement the arm in place.

Death Marshal Number 2 has proved to be my biggest surprise hit in my games so far, leaping a fence one handed, and gunning down the Demonic Double of Viktoria with a single shot. He also marks the model with the most pieces, clocking in at 4 metal pieces, plus somewhat needing a bit of creative basing to look right. Ironically enough, his HAT was a separate piece, and also was the only one to go together without Green Stuffing. Love the pose!

Lastly, comes DM #3, perched on his coffin somewhat like a hawk; this piece went together nice and easily, again only needing green stuff to the arm to keep it stable. I was again struck by the quality of these models; the coffins themselves are incredibly chunky, and make the otherwise somewhat flimsy characters feel like they could take a bit of a knock.

Total Assembly time: 1 hour
Metal Flashing: Minimal
Conversion Required: Minimal
Overall Quality of Figures: Stunning

In finishing, this is a very good product; it was very different from working on GW models, which require extensive assembly for each person on the field, and require you to drop 2-3 hundred bucks to have a viable force. With one box of Malifaux, you can play a small game that lasts an hour.

For veteran modellers, however, if you don't like the look of the models and want to convert them, you don't have many options; Lady J. was a single chunky piece, and I don't think it would have been possible to convert her beyond adding some bling to her. Studio Mcvey has a few models on roughly the same scale that are worth checking out; I may be purchasing their Isabella for an alternative Lady Justice at some point; they both are wonderful models, but I'd like some variety from time to time.

All in all, however, I give this set a 4.5/5, with my only real complaint being that the arms on a lot of the models wouldn't fit with only super glue. Other than that though, for the price I paid (29.95 from Hoard o Bitz on Ebay, shipping included), this is an amazing set that's well worth the buy. I would suggest, if you buy it, to look into the Scales of Justice from Wyrd as your first expansion. It's Lady Justice's Totem, and it works very well with this force.

That's all for me... Space Marines vs. OrksLong time no see!

I've been very busy getting ready to go back to school, and have compiled a lot of source material for new posts this month (1 Product review, a Step By Step tutorial, Hobby Update), and the current post, an Apoc Battle Report! As a primer, visit the Games Workshop website and read up on the Rynn's World Disaster campaign that they wrote many years ago.

This will be a bit more informal than I'd like, since I'm missing the full list of forces that we both lead onto the battlefield. My friend Kyle and I are slowly working our way through the Rynn's World Campaign, re-fighting it the way my army, the Dragon Knights, would have fought it. Thus far, we've got a 3-0 Winning streak in my favour; the Waaagh! was effectively diverted at Goodlanding (Player's Privilege!) to land on the planet of New Rynndar. The Imperial Player (IN ADDITION TO HIS NORMAL FORCES), gets a Planetary Defence Laser, and three strategic assets [Precision Strike, Orbital Bombardment, and Scheduled Bombardment]. This seemed a little lopsided, in addition to gaining an additional 1 asset per player (Working out to one each, since it was only the two of us.) Lastly, the Ork Player gets one less asset than the Imperial Player, since I won the last game in the Campaign, meaning he would regularly have a big ZERO assets. So, we made the following Modifications to the scenario to make things more fair;

1. Ork Player gets 3 Strategic Assets + 1 per player +/- 1 depending on the last mission.
2. All models on the table may take a cover save from the explosion of the monastery when the rogue missile strikes, provided that at least 50% of the unit or model in the case of vehicles, is covered by something else. We ruled that all terrain would be destroyable as well, on a 3+ for barricades and a 5+ for anything not packing an armor value. This gives the Orks (Who it's assumed would be farther from the explosion than the marines), would then have a greater chance of surviving over and above the marines stationed around the base of the building.
3. The Planetary Defense Laser's Minimum Range was Reduced to 24" due to the size of our table. (Later thoughts: I would also remove the Strength D if we did that again, as balance).

Our table ran 8 feet by 6 feet; a great size for our game.

So with a beautiful day (And over 12 hours to play), plenty of coke and Pizza, we set about preparing for the game. Kyle Picked out his strategic assets, choosing:

1. Reinforcements
2. Force Field
3. Rok 'em Boyz!

I went with the three that were given in the campaign (Which we decided to alter after the game), plus my one that we get arbitrarily. I chose the Legion Relic, allowing me to finally assemble my Primarch in all his glory. Based off Lysander's profile, with the Legion Relic, and granted 1 Veteran Skill (Feel no Pain!), Kyle and I decided to replace Bolster Defences with Holocaust from the Daemonhunter's Codex, and grant him a Storm Bolter (Since the model has one).

I bid 7 minutes setup time, and won first turn because of it.

I scheduled my bombardments secretly, and marked down the cluster mine location for my 3 scout bikes on a crude map, strung out across the center barricades. My setup was confined mostly to vehicles and telling Kyle what buildings held what; we decided the lascannons on top of the bunkers were still in working order, but not the heavy bolters.

Deployment items of note: On the far left I deployed a Land Raider Redeemer with 6 Thunderhammer Terminators, and on the far right the stand in for the Fortress of Arrogance; The former was an unexpected blessing, while the latter turned out a bit disappointing later on in the game. I left my scout bikes and close combat scouts in reserve early on, along with a 10 man terminator squad and my Primarch in reserve for a late game counter punch. The building on the far right held a full assault squad with chaplain, while SGT Telion held the far left. Strung out along the middle was my meager display of vehicles.

Kyle bid 15 minutes, and clustered unexpectedly into the opposite corner from where I expected.

The Orks landed in the narrower corner of his deployment zone, his Stompa nearly opposite my Thunderhammer Terminators. With 2-1 Superheavies on the table (The other being a Skullhamma), I was a little concerned that my highly elite force wouldn't be able to stand up to the ork hordes facing me. Kyle clustered most of his boyz within 12 inches of that Force Field, which grants a 4+ INVULNERABLE save to whatever units are within that 24 inch circle, as long as they're not vehicular.

That meant even if I managed to score a direct hit with my ground mulching Defence laser, he would still get a 50% chance to save each boy hit. Also, strung out amongst the vehicles on the far side, was a battlewagon with a big mek in it, granting a 4+ cover save to any vehicle within 6 inches... this included the Stompa, a Deff Dread, and a Trukk loaded with Nobz. The stompa also carried 20 boyz, while the Skullhamma protected another 30 from fire.

The armies face off... entirely too close for Marine Comfort.

Turn 1: Marine Movement

As this is fifth edition, I allowed Kyle to roll for stealing the initiative. With a 5, he nearly snagged it! Fortunate for me! So, after appraising the board (And cursing myself for sticking the Fortress of Arrogance so far from the action!), I decided that the best way to play this would be balls out and bold. First though, came my Scheduled Bombardment; I had expected Kyle to deploy at least a superheavy or a squad back in amongst those buildings, so I selected the cluster of 3 buildings as my first drop point. Unfortunately, the only things within that area were the 8 Deffkoptas Kyle took, so they took a brutal slamming and lost half their number... promptly breaking and flying away.

Plowing through the forest in front of it, the Terminators Disembark.

Having read the profile on the Supa Gattler, I was determined to at least hammer the Stompa once and see if I could stop it. As such, the Land Raider and a Melta equipped rhino plowed through the forest right into the Ork's maw; I was sweating as I rolled that difficult terrain test, praying for anything but a 1!

My remaining movements were fairly rudimentary; shifting vehicles a little so they counted as moved, forcing the Fortress up 6 inches, and lining up my targets for the first round of shooting.

Forcefields Protectin' Da Boyz!

Turn 1: Marine Shooting

My first turn of shooting was interesting and unexpected. My orbital bombardment didn't come in, and most of my big guns did little to nothing; the Baneblade slew a single warbiker with its heavy bolters and missed with both Lascannons. However, with its main cannon it managed to strike a unit of boyz clustered up near their force field. Kyle was magic with saves though, and only lost ten. They didn't do so well, however, when my Thunderfire cannon opened up on the trukk beside them; it scattered onto them all four times, causing another 15 dead orks!

The rest was a bit more satisfying; the Whirlwind took out 5 Stormboyz, and the smaller guns across my army managed to immobilize both Battlewagons (Missile Launchers on a 6!), blow up the Deff Dread, and cause something to go KERUNCH! on a Trukk. As the orks jumped out, the planetary laser swung around to force feed them a round of molten fire, that promptly scattered off them and back onto the lineup of vehicles, destroying a wagon and the deff dread. Man of the match went to the Dreadnought; after only shaking the main gun on the Skullhamma with his TL Lascannon, his rogue Missile Launcher managed to damage its drive!

A Tempting target... will the orks bite?

Turn 1: Marines Assault... ORKS??

Believing their sacrifice to be worth it if they somehow scored a big enough chain reaction to kill it, the Terminators charge the Stompa. What they achieve, however, is 7 shaken results... 4 of which I applied to the main gun, and the other 3 I placed on the Supa Rockets. Kyle rolled his saves for the main gun, and only made half of them (To be expected). The Koptaz also managed to regroup, moving into the farthest back building. He pulled everything else forward 6 inches (And rolling his run rolls in as well, since we knew they wouldn't be doing anything else), and the orks hot footed it across the table with a wave of 5's and 6's! As such, he rolled a 6 foot scatter, but a direct hit, so it travelled 5 feet to the edge of the board, slamming down next to the bunker with SGT Telion in it, and obliterating the defense line beside it. My movement began with a second shelling on cue from my scheduled bombardment; I had chosen the city, again, hoping the unit I'd pounded first turn would be ready to give up the ghost, and was able to catch another pair of deffkoptas.

Hit the deck!!

My scout bikes and Scouts came on, but not where I wanted at all; the close combat scouts took the far board edge, where their combi-flamer would do no good. I got the choice for the Scout Bikes, however, and chose to put them in the same place; I figured the Skullhamma would be a decent target if I managed to destroy it this turn, and the boyz inside would be packed together for my locator beacon guided terminators to attack as well. The Lascannons stripped a pair of structure points from the Skullhamma, and with a high pitched whistling, the ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT came from above, and Immobilized it!

The Icestorm, at Yarricks Behest, pounds the living daylights out of the Skullhamma.

Then, in a true display of what a superheavy is capable of, the Stompa proceeded to absorb the rest of my army's shooting; all but the whirlwind (Which destroyed another 4 Stormboyz, making them run) fired at it, trying to bring it down in a PRECISION STRIKE. While we were hitting on 2's, that armor thirteen seemed blessed by Gork... or possibly Mork. An entire 3000 points of shooting only managed to damage the drive. The Defense laser warmed up again, ratcheting around on decrepit mounts, to pump another round into the behemoth; it scored a direct hit, slaying all but 7 of the boys that had piled out... and shaking the main gun on the Stompa. Turn 2 without the Super Gatla! Woohoo!

Turn 2: Marine Assaults

I only had one unit brave (Or stupid enough) to charge headlong into the Orks, and that was the Terminator squad charging the Warboss and his 3 remaining nobz. They slugged it out heavily, the Orks killing 2 more Terminators while they retaliated by squashing another nob, and wounding the Warboss once. One more Terminator was crunched into nothingness by the warboss' Power Klaw, leaving the Sergeant valiantly trying to hold them off all by himself.

There's an epic combat... wayyyy over there!

Turn 2: Ork Movement

A thousand Greenskin voices (Writer's license again!) raised in a mighty WAAAAAAGH! as Ghazkhull Mad Uruk Thraka called forth a thunderous charge right into the enemy lines. Orks lost what little sense they had and began dashing furiously forward towards my lines, approaching with the speed of... well, a chargine ork! All three units falling back kept going, however, though the rest of Kyle's army lunged forwards. Also, the 30 boyz inside the Skullhamma bailed out of thier stuck ride, anticipating the charge and wanting to be away what could soon become an armored coffin.

Highlights include Ghazkhull leaping up onto the parapet across from where one of my rhinos was parked, and the nob trukk smashing through a set of barricades to wedge itself between that rhino and my whirlwind. The Stompa, servos grinding in protest, also continued, approaching charging range (6-8 inches, we weren't sure) of the scout's bunker. Things were looking grim indeed!

Let the good times WAAAAAAAGH! Kyle had next to no shooting, but plenty of dashing forward a full 6 inches. The boyz from inside the Skullhamma were first across the defense line, and BANGBANGBANG went the cluster mines. Unfortunately, the orks were moving so fast that only three were perforated by the claymores. The rest of the boyz charged through the opening, getting into position to charge my rhino, the bunker with the assault squad in it, the Skyshield landing pad, and my stationary whirlwind.

WARNING: walls may be mined.

Since each of these units, Ghazkhull with his 2+ invulnerable save among them, all had power Klaws, I was looking at a lot of dead vehicles and buildings this turn unless a miracle occured. Some good luck did occur, however, in that the Stompa unleashed all 3 of its supa rockets at once; one bounced off the bunker in front of it, and the other two merely shook the Whirlwind, for all the good it would do me.

Turn 2: Ork Assaults

With a scream, a belch and a whoop, Kyle charged. Going left to right across the field, the 30 boy mob attacking the bunker did little more than shake it, despite autohitting. My rhino went up in a brilliant explosion, killing 1 nob and a couple boyz. So too went the Skyshield, wounding another nob, and letting the explosion from the whirlwind... also detonating, kill a second. Finally, after squashing two nobs all by himself, the last Thunderhammer Terminator finally was laid low by the Warboss, leaving him and a buddy standing way out in left field watching a squad of boyz run the other way. (They must have known what was coming next!)

Klaws open cans to get to the meat inside.

Turn 3: There she blows!!

Describing a graceful arc into the sky, a single missile deviated from its course as Kyle rolled a 6, and fell back towards the ancient monastary. It slammed home with crippling force, detonating the old ammunition stockpile and turning the hillside into a liquid inferno. We resolved the S10 AP1 hits in concentric 1 foot deep arcs from the fortress, so as to imitate the explosion sweeping outward and destroying everything in its path. The Death Toll mounted like crazy; the Thunderfire cannon was blown away, leaving the techmarine alive. Two full combat squads were incinerated on the spot, and the razorback and Dreadnought were immobilized. My scout bikers and all but three of my scouts died horribly, immolated alive. The fortress was untouched, as was the skullhamma.

Nearly 30 orks were removed from the table as the fortress went, leaving two partial ork squads, Ghazkhull (Who with his invul passed easily), 2 nobz, and an immobilized trukk behind. All but SGT Telion on top of the close bunker died as well, and both bunkers were shaken heavily, thier occupants unable to fire out unless they piled out. By my estimate, both Kyle's and my forces were instantly whittled down to a 3rd of thier remaining strength, and most of my men were in the open. It would come down to the Terminators and Assault squad to carry the day.

As the dust settles, the cries of wounded can be heard.

Turn 3: Marine Movement

With my last reserves arriving, I deepstruck close to the table edge with my Terminators, hoping to scatter into the Stompa's back arc. A direct hit was rolled, however, and my 10 armor clad Tactical Dreads landed with a thump. Behind Ghazkhull, a rift in the warp opened and Terragon stepped out, his armored bulk nearly the size of a Terminator himself, his flame wreathed sword cutting a firey contrail through the air.

Where did everyone go?

Other than that, little else moved, as the 3 remaining scouts leapt on the farthest back objective, and the 1 marine from on top of the fortress headed for the rear objective, in case the Techmarine fell. The assault squad left thier bunker, twin flamers at the fore to engage the nearest ork boyz, and the combat squad in the razorback piled out to face another small unit of them. Lastly, my third scheduled bombardment fell, clipping the side of the Skullhamma and striking another structure point off.

Turn 3: Marine Shooting

The shooting was more a series of mop-ups, wiping out the nobz and boyz in the open before the remnants of the fortress. The Fortress even forwent shooting at the Skullhamma in front of it with its main gun, opting instead to fire on the Stompa. It was slightly out of range, which left SGT Telion to try to slowly crank the decrepit Lascannon around as the clanking behemoth approached. Aiming quickly, he snapped off a shot, and against all odds, immobilized it just out of charging range!

Apocalyptic EXPLOSION!!

The Terminators pelted it with Missiles as well, but woe betide the Marines, for the Deth Cannon and Supa Gattla made thier saves! The last shooting I had was my pair of lascannons on the Baneblade; they opened up on the Skullhamma, and sent it skyrocketing into a massive 18 inch template that blew a gigantic crater into the turf.

Turn 3: Marine Assaults

There wasn't really much left on the board now, so Kyle and I decided we'd run one more turn, just to see what would happen. I only made the one charge with my Assault Marines, wiping out the last 10 boyz not fleeing on the table, and then we moved to the Orks last turn.

Victory...?

Turn 3: Orks Movement

At this stage, all that really could move was Ghazkhull, so for honours sake, he turned around and charged towards the Dragon Knight, who waved his fellows away, choosing to take on the greenskinned lummox himself, alone. Kyle's REINFORCEMENTS werent an issue anymore; he chose to forgo thier return to finish the game quickly; I agreed, mainly because anything he brought back would take so much fire first turn that it'd probably just die arbitrarily.

Turn 3: Orks Shooting

The Stompa took aim; we were both ready and waiting for what this thing would do. The only gun it had was the Supa Gattla and Deth Kannon, but damned if they couldn't wipe me right outta the game. So it came to this gun, and what damage it can do. He rolled to hit, and scored 12 shots on the first unit (a 4 man combat squad), and wiped it out. Then he moved onto another 5 man squad, and knocked them down to 2 men. Then he turned to the assault squad, and unfortunately rolled doubles. However, the deth kannon still got to fire at the last unit, slaying those last two marines.

DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA!BOOM!

THE FINAL ASSAULT!

This was what we'd all been waiting for; the showdown between Ghazkhull, and Terragon the Warrior. While objectives would decide the game, this fight would tell the moral victory (And also decide whether or not the vaunted Primarch would be able to return in the Battle of Jadeberry Hill). The Warboss charged headlong into the Lord of Dragons, meeting his Sword with Klaw and Headbutt. On the charge, Thraka has 7 attacks at Strength 10, striking at I1. Terragon, using Lysander's profile with the Legion Relic, Strikes 6 times at Initiative 5, S10, and with a successful psychic test can cast Holocaust which scores an additional S5 AP- hit.

They were VERY evenly matched, Terragon's Feel No Pain useless, and both of them Eternal Warriors. Terragon swung 6 times, hitting 4 and wounding twice, hacking away at the enraged warboss. Ghazkhull headbutted the valiant Dragon Knight (causing a wound), and grabbed him with his giant claws, cutting deep into his armor and flesh (and another!). Terragon Unleashed a mighty bellow and the air around him burst into flame, sending the Warboss reeling (And delivering a third wound on a failed armor save!).

Clash of the Titans!

At this stage, the game had ended, but we decided on one last assault phase to decide the combat. Terragon swung, connected twice, and a single wound snuck through, striking Ghazkhull down. However, as the warboss, nose bloodied and a horn missing, stumbled backwards, he grinned maniacally and flipped open a contraption on his suit of mega-armor and activated his hidden Telly-porta, disappearing from the battlefield, leaving Yarrick frustrated again as his tank finally rumbled up beside the wounded Dragon Knight.

GAME OVER!

The Game ended in a resounding victory for the Dragon Knights, as we held two objectives to the orks Nil. We could have fought it out to bring in Kyle's Skullhamma again through reserves, but it was getting late and it was a very long shot in his favour.

As the mountain blazed away in the background, bodies slowly being devoured by the rushing lava, the surviving marines scatter to the four winds, each drawing away elements of the ork force as more greenskins make planetfall. However, I still believe that the scenario was a little too fair to the Imperial Players. From now on, I think I may make some modifications to the scenario to alter how it plays. My thoughts are as such:

1. The Imperial Player gets the Defense Laser free. On a larger table I would simply choose that the Imperial Player MUST purchase the Defense laser, and gets the missile bank from the Fortress of Redemption for free. This soaks up 350pts of the Imperial Player's reserves, and allows the orks to outnumber them more. I felt it was slightly unbalancing and very deadly on a smaller table though, so with the shortened 24 inch minimum range I'd have it cost 500pts instead of 350.

2. The strategems that the Imperial Player gets arbitrarily are all well and good, but they a) feel like they're designed to pound orks, with multiple large blast templates, and b) don't fit the scenario very well. I personally don't believe that the Imperials, on a mountain fortress, would be using orbital weapons on the position due to error causing friendly casualties. As such, when next I run this mission, I'll suggest that the Imperial Player instead take:

- Bunkers
- Obstacles
- Supreme Command Headquarters

+1 per player

That makes them have to play more defensively, and gives the ork player a chance to move up with more boyz. Plus, I would keep the ork player getting an equal number of toys, +1 per player, and +/- 1 depending on the outcome of the previous game.

All in all, it was a blast (No pun intended), and the game was fun and really cinematic. Next time I feel it'll be a bit more fair, and hopefully a little more challengeing. Kudos to my buddy Kyle for being a great sport even while I was pounding the crap out of him, and well done for the tactically crazy (But very orky) charge he pulled off turn two... it was devastating!

Played an amazing game of Apoc lately? As was the intent behind the review concept, I followed the tutorial to the letter, and then rated it off of three different categories; Artistry, Clarity, and Teachability. These three categories then get broken down into an overall mark out of 5. So let's get started; here's what the Firewarriors should look like (painted by the author):

Let's get started, shall we?

Artistry: - 8/10

This is a great looking bunch of models, and the photos are very well done. I never had a problem with clarity of the actual photos (All of which were nicely in focus) and the idea of adding the paint pot to the picture was a good one. When all is said and done, these Firewarriors really pop, with a cool, crisp finish that you don't see often with lighter coloured armies.

In terms of technique, I really can't fault much; these are very good minis, with a stellar paintjob. My only incongruity (In my experience with the tutorial) is that for the tutorial writer to get Space Wolf's Grey to cover in one coat, he must have laid it on really thick. I naturally thin down my paints, and as such they needed a second coat.

In addition, the writer does a stellar job on creating lenses for the Pulse Rifles and backpacks, but didn't put eyes on the Shas'ui... lets see the whites... er, oranges of those eyes! Other than those few nitpicky issues, however, an entire army done up in this colour scheme would look AMAZING on the tabletop, and would turn some heads.

Clarity: - 8/10

The writer is no slouch to creating tutorials (As showcased by the 15 or so he's written to date), but this one isn't always the most clear. It's a very simple and straightforward job he's done, easy to follow most of the time, with only a few hiccups along the way; some steps go into that detail, but others (Such as working on the Shas'ui's topknot), are merely a picture with some dialog. For intermediate painters, this shouldn't be a problem at all!

Sometimes though, there are times when you're left wondering what the intent of the step was, or whether or not you've completed it fully. For advanced painters (and intermediate ones), this isn't really a problem, as we're fairly certain of how he went about getting each effect (Washes, etc). A novice, brand new to the hobby, might have difficulties if they've never used this sort of thing before. This isn't for lack of trying on the writer's part, or elitism, but merely an oversight.

Teachability: - 7/10

This tutorial flip-flops back and forth between being better suited for an intermediate painter and an expert, as it doesn't try much to teach a new painter how to achieve the effects pictured in the tutorial. While this may give newcomers pause when attempting thier Bork'an Firewarriors, it is hardly an issue to higher level painters due to the simplicity of the paint scheme. (And the well documented photo log).

Where the writer really gains points is at the end, when he goes into teaching mode for the snow effects, going step by step and out of his way to get a good effect for the finished project. I for one found it very helpful, as my snow flock would have looked sludge-like and poor had I not followed his advice.

Given that this Tutorial pioneered new ground, however, and was innovative given its lack of prior source materials... since GW seems to think we all want orange Tau, I feel that it did an excellent job preparing me (An intermediate painter) for the task ahead.

Conclusion:

I believe that this Tutorial is a very good one, and is far better than the Games Workshop Tutorial, which only gives users a picture of the Bork'an to go from. I feel it is best suited to Intermediate, or Advanced painters, given the less structured form of it, but the paint scheme is simple enough that new painters should be able to follow it without too much trouble.

FINAL SCORE = 4/5

Last Thoughts:

My experience with this tutorial was a largely positive one, and I will be continuing to follow the basics of it while working on my Tau. Needless to say, I will have to adapt it a bit for the purposes of Crisis Suits, Devilfish, and all other forms of units in the army. In addition to the tip about the Space Wolf Grey I mentioned earlier, I also suggest taking some undiluted Brown Ink and adding it to the Shining Gold part of the Pulse Rifle (Which I too have no idea what it is!). This adds some definition to it and adds to the high contrast look of the model.

My Result!

And now that you've read my thoughts on the matter, what about yours? Have you used this tutorial? Found ones like it, that are better/worse? Got results of your own to show off?
Dragon Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11923697878871992308noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7168899359935764323.post-66222476644147426542010-08-15T11:12:00.000-07:002010-08-19T18:55:43.341-07:00Tutorial Reviews: Overview
Hello again!

So to kick off one of my semi-regular posts that'll be coming up, I'm writing this overview. My plan is to take tutorials that I find on the net and use them to paint certain models (Either where I haven't decided on a colour scheme yet, or where I just want to give it a shot), and review them based off thier usefulness and ability to output great looking models (As well as entertainment value as well!)

I'll be rating each tutorial out of 5. Three factors will go into making up that 5 points:

Artistry: Namely how good the models will look when all is said and done, and how good the quality of the pictures are that the tutorial writer is putting up. They're rated on a scale of 10, where...

1-3 means the models will look subpar at best (3 colour minimum, or poor painting skill), and/or the pictures are terrible (blurry, off centered, etc...)

4-6 means the finished product will be tabletop standard, looking good in a massed force from three to six feet away; Pictures are decent, but not incredible.

7-9 means the finished product will draw attention from gamers that you face, where they will want to get down to table level, or ask to pick it up for a better look; these are what I'd consider models that would stand a good chance of getting you best painted, or possibly winning a painting contest. Picture Quality is good overall, no blurryness and well focussed.

A perfect 10 means the photos are run through photoshop, and this model could compete in a Golden Demon, if not win it! This is what I expect from people who've been in the hobby for years on end.

Clarity: Specifically how clear the instructions are, and the detail that the person goes into describing what all you need to do to paint the model(s).

1-3 is earned because there are little to no instructions at all: Either no pictures accompanying the instructions, or just a picture with the name of the paint to apply next. These instructions are very vague and require you to fill in the blanks for much of the model.

4-6 means the instructions are simple, and straight forward. Pictures are included, and the process is divided into steps that may contain multiple colours of paint being applied all at once. The instructions, while fairly clear, still leave holes and miss portions of the model.

7-9 is received because the instructions are clear and detailed, showing you step-by-step in photos how the look was achieved for the model. If anything is missed it's one or two small details, like a button on a panel. For each step you only apply one colour of paint, with an accompanying photo.

A perfect 10 comes because there is no possibility for error. The tutorial designates what paint we're using, why, and on what portions of the model. Multiple pictures may be taken for this step, and they each have indicators of where the paint is going. The instructions are step-by-step, with nothing missed.

Teachability: This indicates how helpful the tutorial is in teaching new skills or pointing out trouble spots in the process of the tutorial, possibly by providing links to other sources on how to perform techniques, or noting different ways of acheiving certain effects.

1-3 is a tutorial that doesn't attempt to help readers achieve its affects, using terminology and techniques that a brand new painter wouldn't even have heard of yet, let alone hope to accomplish. An example of this would be a tutorial that uses Non Metallic Metals to achieve a gold look, and for the step involving it says: "Use NMM shading to highlight the gold on the armor. When you're done, move on to step two."

4-6 describes a tutorial that gives basic hints on how to achieve techniques stated, but doesn't go into much detail. It assumes you're at least an intermediate level painter, with a solid understanding of techniques involved, and are willing to try for more complicated ones. Example: "Use Non Metallic Metal shading on the Gold Armor. You're going to want to do some blended highlights, with the lightest colours on the bottom edges of the armor to achieve this. Once the armor is done..."

7-9 is a tutorial that goes into great detail, step by step with techniques and actively tries to teach the new painter to paint to a higher level than what they've done before. It provides examples and photo advice of how to achieve particular effects, and points out trouble spots involved with what you're trying to achieve. An Example, using the Non Metallic Metals above, would be one that starts like so: "Non Metallic Metals are a great way to get a metallic sheen on your model, without actually using metallic paints. This is a multiple step process, however, and you need to pick your colours carefully. To do the gold armor...." And proceeds to split the gold armor up into several steps.

A perfect 10 provides multiple resources on how to achieve different techniques, and teaches as though the painter was just picking up a brush for the first time, giving them practice ideas, or alternatives to more difficult ideas. In Example, using the NMM techniques above, the tutorial writer would also add something like this: "Now, if you're not ready to try Non Metallics, this is how we achieve the look of gold with the metallic paints..."

These three categories will be what I use to generate my mark out of 5 for the Tutorial in general, and then there will be a blurb underneath about the level of difficulty that I ascribed this one (Beginner, Intermediate, Expert).

After that, I'll move onto my own experience following the tutorial, anything that I choose to alter from it, and my finished efforts that I came up with, followed by a comparison between the tutorial outcome, and my own. Finally, if I feel that certain areas weren't covered well enough, I'll post up resources on techniques that will help.

That being said, I'm off! I'll be posting my first review soon, on a Tau Firewarrior tutorial for the Bork'an sept. Until then, feel free to comment on the idea, if you have ideas, and sign up as a follower!
Dragon Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11923697878871992308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7168899359935764323.post-57425526721806412662010-08-11T09:34:00.000-07:002010-08-11T09:42:15.726-07:00Spikey Bits Giveaway... As they're some of the most vividly striking models out there, I decided it'd be fun to do a 'step-by-step how to' on how to paint them up. This will help a) anyone that absolutely loves my DIY colour scheme to reproduce DragonKnights of your own, and b) help you take bits and pieces from the experience to help recreate parts of my paintjob that you like. There are a few things, such as faces, lenses, and the weaponry's energy effects that I won't be going into in the greatest of detail, mainly because I intend to do a tutorial on how to do those specifically in future.

So, without further ado, grab your brushes and paints, and let's go! Also, if you don't have a particular colour that I use, don't worry about it; I use exclusively Games Workshop paints, and they aren't that hard to mix to a different colour. Also, you'll note that the primered photos show a slight blue tinge to some of these guys. I had a bit of a disaster with the Army Painter blue spray in which almost all the detail was lost on the models. After a dunk in the bacta tank of Simple Green at home, however, we're right back on track!

Step 1: So to start off, we've got our primary basecoat. I mix roughly a 2:1 mix of regal blue to Midnight Blue. An acceptable substitute for Midnight (Since GW doesn't make it anymore!) is Necron Abyss. We just want to darken the Regal Blue a little to generate an undercoat; overload with Midnight blue or Necron Abyss, and it gives the armor a weird sheen.

Step 2: Next is a light coat of straight Regal Blue. You want to avoid getting it in all the cracks and crevices; this step is closer to a drybrush than actual painting. All you want to do is bring the prominent armor locations up to Regal Blue, leaving the darker colours underneath. If we were working with a lighter blue, I'd suggest an Asurmen Blue wash, but it doesn't show up very well here. Also, now is a good time to apply a coat of straight Regal Blue to the head of the Thunder Hammer.

Step 3: Mechrite Red now goes on the shoulder pads, shield, and the handle of the Thunder Hammer. This is our basecoat for those vibrant reds in a few more steps. I suggest leaving the purity seals and lenses alone for now, as we can use a better base than Mechrite.

Step 4: Astronomicon Grey is now used for the basecoat for everything we want a vibrant white (Helmet, Wings, Skulls on the shields), and the Crux Terminatus on the shoulder. Normally I base with Deneb Stone, and this is a perfectly acceptable alternative, but I find that the Grey allows for a far more striking contrast later. You do whatever you're more comfortable with!

Step 5: Boltgun Metal. This is my least favourite part, but it has to be done! The joints of the legs and arms, the vents on the back of the armor, the shaft of the hammer and the vents on the helmet need to be done. In addition, as each Terminator is unique on some level, there will be sensors and parts of the shield (In this case the dagger tied to the front) that you will want Boltgunned.

Step 6: The Shining Gold shoulder pad trim that distinguishes Dragon Knights from Crimson Fists, plus the kneepads as well, are absent for the most part here. Some of the Terminators will have kneecaps that need a coat straight onto the model (Which may be slightly poor to cover, so you may need two coats), and each Storm Shield has a Templar's style cross engraved on the front that can use a coat of it. Honour badges and the rings marking the edges of the hammer's grip also need a splash of paint.

Step 7: It's a bit dark to tell (And a poor model choice), but here's where the Deneb Stone comes in. This is the main colour for the purity seals attached to your Terminators (sometimes there can be 2-3 of them!). I also used it on the laurel on this Terminator's chest for a change, but some people will even colour them green. Don't feel my way is the only way!

Step 8: n the absence of Brazen Brass (Another dead colour from GW's past), I'm using Dwarf Bronze on the cables to the Thunder Hammer and the round joints on the Terminator armor. In addition, the two prongs on the end of the helmet look great done up this way, as we'll make them look dark copper by the time we're done.

Step 9: Now for a final touch, apply some Scab Red to the wax on the purity seals. This marks the end of the 'basecoating' stage; while there are a couple '1 shot' items of paint now, the bases are done now. If want, skip ahead to the Mithril Silver section, and you can put these on the table and count them as fully painted in 10 steps! However, if you want to go further, keep going with the next step. Washes!

Step 10: Now we get to a slightly less time consuming portion of the tutorial; if you work quickly, you can get 3-4 washes on a single model, and then let it sit for 15 minutes until it's all dry, rather than applying a wash, waiting for it to dry, applying another wash, etc. So to start off, apply a Badab Black wash to all the points of the model you painted Boltgun Metal, AND Astronomicon Grey. The Grey will look incredibly dark, but never fear, it'll come out looking crisp and bright when we're done! I've had it told to me before, and I agree: the new washes are skill in a bottle! Apply a few of these and your mini will look 100% more finished than it did before!

Step 11: If you have Brown Ink, you're golden, otherwise you might want to try Devlan Mud, though the Mud generally doesn't work quite as well since it has a dull sheen. You want to apply the Brown Ink CAREFULLY to the interior edges of the cross on the shield, to darken the red in there and give the gold a stronger contrast. Then you want to apply the ink in a 2:1 Water to ink wash to the gold on the model, being careful not to let the shiny ink slop. Also, you want to put a 1:1 mix of the ink and water on all the dwarf bronze areas (Cables and joints). Lastly, use the 2:1 mix (Sparingly, let a paper towel absorb some of it first), to outline the Crux Terminatus that you washed black, on the red, to draw a dark circle around it.

Step 12: Apply a Griphonne Sepia wash to all Deneb Stone (Which should be, for the most part, just the purity seals. I also applied it to the greenstuff tabard of my Sarge.)

Step 13: Apply Asurmen Blue to the red grip of the Thunder Hammer. This is going for a red leather look; if you want to experiment, try a Leviathan Purple or Thraka Green wash for nice results! One note of caution though; Baal Red doesn't wash well with Mechrite AT ALL, mainly because the Baal Red wash has a lighter pigment.

Step 14: Working with white has always bothered me; it usually used to come out looking very blotchy and you can see the undercoat beneath the white. However I tested this method on the Terminators, and it turned out nicely! Mix your Skull White 2:1 Paint:Water, and then highlight the helmet as though it was a face, letting the grey underneath show through. I'll be posting a more in depth Tutorial on Faces and Helmets later, but for now, highlight the bridge of the 'nose', the edges of the 'cheeks', and the top of the helmet with the 3 bumps, allowing the Grey to show through in the cracks like I've done here. It'll probably take two coats of white mixed 2:1, but once done you'll have a striking helmet! Also use this on anything else you painted Astronomicon Grey, AND the outer edges of the purity seals.

Step 15: Now apply a nice, even coat of Blood Red to the Shoulder Pads, Shield, and raised edges of the wax for the purity seals, letting the scab red show in the center of the wax. Leave the eyes for now; we'll get to them in a bit. Also, you can basecoat your gemstones if you're going to make them red in the long run.

Step 16: Now apply Mithril Silver to the honour badges on the Terminator armor, and highlight the metal that you washed black with it as well, hitting the upper edges of anything that has sharp corners. Don't over-do it though; you just want a hint of light glinting off the venerated metal.

Step 17: This step will take a while, and may have you frustrated by the time you're done! Take Enchanted Blue, straight out of the bottle, and apply it carefully with your fine detail brush to EVERY hard edge on the suit of Terminator Armor that was painted Regal Blue. Right now we're just picking out the edges, so don't worry about directional highlighting just yet, and don't worry too much if you slop onto the rest of the armor; as long as it doesn't mar something on a red or white section, you should be fine. We can clean up any little mistakes later with some more Regal Blue. Also, now is a great time to drybrush Enchanted Blue onto the hammer head, letting the back edge of it stay Regal Blue

Step 18: Enter the Sarge! This next step (after you've been cursing all the blue highlighting), is relatively simple and short; take some Fortress Grey and apply it to the Crux Terminatus, allowing the darker gray in the crevices to show through, instead of filling them.

Step 19: Back to all this highlighting nonsense, this step shouldn't take as long as the enchanted blue did. Apply Blazing Orange to ALL the edges of the shoulder pads, and the shield, interior edges included. Also, any gems that you based blood red can get a highlight of orange now too.

Step 20: Now you want to go back over the areas you just did, and pick out the upper edges and corners of the red areas and cover over them with a thin coat of Fiery Orange. This shouldn't take too long, just a steady hand.

Step 21: With the Chaos Black, we're just going to pick out a couple details. For the purity seals, water down the black to a 2:1 paint/water mix, and hold the brush a little farther back than you normally would. This'll make your hand shake a bit, but it's worth it, as your slightly squiggling brush will now create 'script' on those purity seals that's convincing. In addition, fearless painters may want to write names on engraved parchment like on the Sarge's chest and the shield of one of the Terminators.

Step 22: This step will consume a bit of paint, mainly because Mithril Silver and Shining Gold both dry very quickly, and they look terrible watered down. Anyhow, you want a 1:1 mix of the two paints, and you want to pick out the upper edges of all the gold on the model, wherever light would strike. This is an excellent opportunity to also clean up any small spills you had with the brown ink! Don't highlight the dwarf bronze though; we're done fooling with it.

Step 23: With a fine detail brush, you want to base the eye lenses in Scab Red. I'm going to do the next few steps all at once, since I'm going to do a lense tutorial in the future. If you're not fond of doing them though, Scab Red is a perfectly legitimate colour to leave them. If you want a good tutorial on how to do them though, Look inside "How to Paint Space Marines" for the guide I use.

Steps 24-26: Here we have the finished lenses; after applying the Scab Red, cover half the lense with Blood Red, with the lighter red facing towards the front of the helmet. Next cut that red area in half with Blazing Orange, and finish with a dot of skull white at the apex of the lense, near the back. You know you've found the right spot if it's the point where the lense bumps out the most, and then suddenly retracts into the helmet. This might be easiest if you have a raggedy old fine detail brush down to its last few bristles. Now's also a great time, since you have the white, to clean up any mistakes you made with the red that went out onto the helmet.

Step 27: This is another finicky bit, but not as tricky as the gold. We've got the same idea; Mix a 1:1 mix of Enchanted Blue and Ice Blue, and apply it to only the upper edges of the armor. They don't dry quite as quickly, and you should be able to keep them fairly thin with the occasional drop of water. The tricky bit though, is knowing when to stop; generally I use the rule that if you cut the length of an edge into thirds, this highlight should only take up 1/3rd of the edge. On a square piece of armor, therefore, with two edges pointing skyward, you would have 1/3rd of the mixed highlight, 1/3rd in the center pure enchanted blue, and the remaining 1/3rd the mixed highlight. Play around with it, find what you're comfortable with, and don't forget to drybrush this colour onto the hammer head!

Step 28: What, another blue highlight? I'm going mad! This time apply thinned down ice blue to the upper corners of everything, just like you did with the Fiery Orange. You should only be covering about half of each of those mixed highlights you just did, to give a nice crisp transition. Lastly, that hammer head is really starting to look frosty towards the front... give it another drybrush!

Step 29: Since we've been working at it all the way through this tutorial, we might as well finish the Thunder Hammer, though I'll be re-posting the way I do them at a later date. Now mix a 2:1 Skull White/Ice Blue mix, and drybrush this onto the STRIKING POINT on the hammer... repeat, only where he's going to be hitting people. Now clean off your brush even further, and carefully drybrush back along the edges of the hammer to the back of it; if you worked up the colours in stages, it'll look like this blue force is working its way to the head of the hammer to erupt on contact!

Step 30: This step is up to you whether you do it or not; I like to apply 'Ardcoat to the leather part of the hammer haft, and all the gems on the terminator to give them a bit more sparkle and make the leather look shiny. If you use a spray on Matte Varnish (I recommend Army Painter for this!), you'll want to wait until afterwards to put this on, or else your shine will disappear!

Step 31: Last, but not least, the finishing touch to the model is the Chapter Symbol on the right arm. I'll be doing a tutorial on freehand (once I'm better at it!), but for now the paint scheme is Deneb Stone for the base of the wings, followed by skull white for the striations on the wings. Chaos Black on the Dragon's Head, followed by Codex Grey for the sword blade. Go over the black slightly with Blood Red for the hilt of the sword, and then outline it in black. Finish up with blazing orange for the glowing nostrils.

Step 32: No picture for this step, mainly because I'll be doing a basing article later as well; however, for my bases I start with Scorched Brown, Drybrush heavily on Bestial Brown, Moderately Snakebite Leather, and then increasingly lighter Drybrushes of Snakebite:Skull White mix, until it reaches the colour of bleached bone. The base I then ring with Black, and stick Games Workshop Static "Glade" Grass to it sporadically.

And now you're done!

I hope everyone found this helpful, and enjoyed the read. I'll be posting a tutorial on how to do SM Helmets and bare Faces in the future, as well as basing techniques and how-to paint Powered Weapons. If there's anything here anyone would like a tutorial for in particular (Like an in-depth look at the white, or hard edging), feel free to let me know and I'll put it into the pipeline.

Comments are welcome, and encouraged!! For now, this is DragonKnight, signing off!Dragon Knighthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11923697878871992308noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7168899359935764323.post-36442263442868173732010-07-29T20:30:00.000-07:002010-07-29T20:30:37.097-07:00Orks, Orks, Orks, Orks! WAAAGH!For the month of July I had planned on finishing my first 10 Snakebites for my ork army. They were a fun challenge, to make regular Assault on Black Reach boyz look tribal and tough. I gave them a slightly darker hue than regular boyz, in keeping with the tradition that older, and tougher orks were darker than their younger, weedier bretheren.

From the arid wastes of the desert world Arkhan II (Pulled strictly from imagination), the Snakebite boyz of Warboss GrotStompa are ready to charge across the battlefield and take round after round on the chin for the chance to get to grips with the enemy. I'll be fielding them as 'Ard Boyz.

I'll be doing a step-by-step of how to paint my boyz at some point, as well as some of the upcoming units that I'll be painting for the Motivational Challenge on the Freebootaz forum. These guys are an example of my Level 3 paintjob, so they'd be costing about $4.00 each to get them commissioned.

Next month's work should include tau, done in a colour scheme contained in the codex, originally designed for the Bork'an sept. I'll be posting up a step-by-step with them as well, though this original case will be based off the guide found on the "All Things 40k" Blog.

For now, all I can say in parting is "WAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHH!"

The pictures aren't the greatest, unfortunately, but that's mainly because the light source was the overhead of a friend's laundry room. So now all that remains is the 5 gaunts that I need to paint for my other client, and then we're on to painting things up for ebay. As it stands now, I'm looking for projects to add to my workload, so if you need something done, shoot me an email: DragonKnightStudios@hotmail.com. Thanks for looking!
Ultramarines, Tyranids, and Rhinos, Oh My!Another day, another dollar... or six, for that point!

I've gotten some more work done on my Ultramarines Commission; 8 marines from Assault on Black Reach, and a Rhino.

Cost per Marine: $3 per model
Cost for the Rhino: $16

As it stands, there're only 3 marines and the tank to go, so work's progressing nicely. As you can see from the red box, those are the two marines from the unit that were already done by the person giving me the job. I'm pretty pleased with how well they've matched up! The 5 that are done right now took maybe an hour and a half each to go, so it's a case of seeing that work get done right before your eyes as you do it! Tomorrow I'll be working more on the Tyranids for my friend Kyle, and post up pictures of the current work and how far along I've gotten. That's all for now!

My tiny home based painting service is just getting off the ground, but already it's been a blast to do. This blog will be upkept for two reasons; One, to record my WIP on what I'm currently doing, and Two, to spread awareness that hey! There's a Canadian based miniatures painter whose looking for work for significantly less than some of the bigger guys out there.

As such, todays post is just an information post, to give you an idea of just who I am:

Name: Robert Mills
Wargaming Experience: 4 years of 40k!
Favourite army: Who else, but the Dragon Knights of Terra Space Marines!
Worst Enemy: Necrons! I hate those silver terminators of doom!
Favourite Wargaming Moment: I was peppering a unit of Sisters with the assault cannon on my immobilized Land Raider Redeemer, and rolled three 6's to wound them. They needed a 4+ cover save to survive, and my opponent jauntily rolls three 6's to save! The odds against that are somewhere around 300 to 1!
Things I hate most: Getting tabled, Smoke (Cigarettes and Wacky Tabacky), difficult players, and having nothing to paint.

So, as of today I just purchased about $350 of Marines, which I'm hoping to resell; I'll be posting up the list here when they arrive if anyone is interested in picking something up. In the mean time, I have a tournament to go to on saturday, and am still trying to finish a Rhino APC in time for it... current photo below (About 50% done). Thanks for reading, and I'll be posting back tomorrow with some more WIP for current clients!
